Republican, Conservative and Independence candidate for U.S. Congress Ann Marie Buerkle today criticized Democrat incumbent Representative Dan Maffei for ducking two debates proposed by separate organizers.
Maffei is refusing to appear with Buerkle at an October 19th debate on WHEC-TV 10 in Rochester and at an October 28th debate at Temple Adath Yeshurun in DeWitt. Instead, Maffei is insisting he be allowed to appear at both events separate from Buerkle.
Early last month, Buerkle wrote to Maffei challenging him to multiple debates. “I stand ready to debate you honestly, publicly, and frequently between now and November 2nd,” wrote Buerkle.
To date, Buerkle and Maffei have debated at WSYR CH 9, WSYR 570AM, YNN CH 10 and at the Thursday Morning Roundtable. They have another debate tonight, which will air live on WCNY at 8:00 PM.
Maffei’s refusal to participate alongside Buerkle is likely a response to growing support for the challenger, who was recently been elevated to full Young Gun by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). In addition, recent polling puts Buerkle ahead of Maffei in head-to-head balloting, and former President Clinton stumped for Maffei in Syracuse Monday in an attempt to reverse his campaign’s decline.
