Ann Marie, commenting on a report by independent government economists and actuaries that projects the health care overhaul law will actually raise national health care spending over the next ten years rather that lower it, said, “The goal of health care reform should be to rein in costs while improving access to care. Dan Maffei promised the massive health care overhaul bill he championed would lower national health care costs. Instead, it will raise them over the next decade.”
The report, produced by economists and actuaries at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and published in the journal Health Affairs, shows spending in U.S. health care will grow by 6.3% per year over the next ten years. Prior to passage of health care overhaul, the same spending was projected to increase by 6.1% annually.
Buerkle, a registered nurse and former assistant attorney general with Upstate Medical University as her client, argues that health care reform as she has proposed would move today’s bureaucracy-driven, heavily-regulated third-party payment system to a new patient-centered system of consumer choice. Her plan preserves patient choice, protects access to health care, and controls costs without hurting job growth, reducing patient care, or slashing Medicare for seniors.
